Giving God the Wheel

Wendy Fung found Christ and ultimately her purpose in life (for now) through the actions of Chi Alpha group members.
I came to the University of the Pacific (UOP) in the fall of 1990 with ambitions of becoming a pharmacist. I had signed up for the 5-year "crash course" Doctor of Pharmacy program where you take 2 years of pre-pharmacy requirements and 3 years (school year-round) of the professional program.

I remember hearing the last words my mother spoke before I left Hawaii: "I hope you find a nice Christian fellowship to join at UOP." (Yeah, right! Like that  was a priority!) My mother had accepted Christ 2 years before and was praying for my salvation.

Driving Them Crazy

I had adjusted well to the collegiate life. I had the second highest GPA in the class of pre-pharmacy students. But there was still something missing in my life and the Christians I knew seemed to have it. I found myself fighting against this love I knew God wanted to give to me.

For 7 months I drove several Chi Alpha Christians crazy with all my questions about God. I tried to prove there are many ways to heaven and that you just have to be a good person. I was known to crash Bible studies with one of my many "deep theological" questions. I even berated Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship for a few months, calling them "freaks" since they were so into loving God.

But as I watched their actions, I was convinced there was something to these people's story-especially one girl who was also from Hawaii. The transformation I saw in her as Christ worked in her life was real.

I struggled with becoming a Christian since it meant I would have to admit I was not in control of my life and that God ultimately was. I had to come to an understanding as to why I needed Jesus in my heart despite the fact that in society's eyes I was a "good" person. It was a humbling decision, but in May of 1991, I asked that Hawaiian girl to pray with me and ask Jesus into my life.

A New Learning Curve

In the next few years of college, I became heavily involved with people, Chi Alpha's discipleship classes and fellowship, and my local church's Sunday school classes. I was hungry for anything God had for me.

Chi Alpha taught us to make God's will a priority in our lives. I learned about being a servant and giving to God and others in time as well as finances. There were many Friday night Chi Alpha sermons that impacted me, especially one message that focused on making decisions in light of eternity. This lesson continues to be an important part of my life.

An Interesting Turn

In December of 1992, my life took an interesting turn while I was praying at a Chi Alpha S.A.L.T. conference. I really felt God telling me to become a part of short-term missions.

A few months later, I received a call from a former UOP pharmacy graduate who was working with a new medical missions group called Project Compassion (PC) in San Diego. Every month, they went down to Mexico and held a 1-day medical clinic in the poorest areas of Tijuana. PC was in need of pharmacy students. I ended up somehow taking about 15 students and teachers down on one of these trips. Then I took another group, and another. Soon I realized that this was what God was talking about.

My last year in pharmacy school came and I had to apply for residency. I felt that God was telling me to become a part of PC, so I applied for a "long shot" residency program at UC-San Diego Medical Center. Several professors explained to me how difficult it would be for me to get into that program. I thanked them and said, "It's okay, if that's what God wants, it will happen." By an act of God, I got into the program.

Catapulted for Life

I have been a part of Project Compassion now for 6 years. God continues to surprise me and challenge me to do more for His kingdom.

If you were to ask me 5 years ago what I would be doing now, I never would have said this. I thank God that Chi Alpha was there for me and He was able to use it as a catapult for my life.

Wendy Fung was involved in Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship as a student at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, while Curt and Kelly Harlow were campus missionaries there.
